Psalm 63: 1-11….Think about it!

1 O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you;
my soul thirsts for you;
my flesh faints for you,
as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
2 So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary,
beholding your power and glory.
3 Because your steadfast love is better than life,
my lips will praise you.
4 So I will bless you as long as I live;
in your name I will lift up my hands.
5 My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food,
and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips,
6 when I remember you upon my bed,
and meditate on you in the watches of the night;
7 for you have been my help,
and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy.
8 My soul clings to you;
your right hand upholds me.
9 But those who seek to destroy my life
shall go down into the depths of the earth;
10 they shall be given over to the power of the sword;
they shall be a portion for jackals.
11 But the king shall rejoice in God;
all who swear by him shall exult,
for the mouths of liars will be stopped
.

Comment: Does believing in the inspiration of scripture mean that we accept it word for word or put things into context and act on them? If looking for guidance when depressed a bit, I come on ‘Judas hanged himself’, should I rush out and do the same? The answer is a resounding ‘NO’. I love this Psalm and David’s clear declaration of his yearning for and seeking of God. May I copy that well! But are we assured if we do that ‘My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food‘. There are many Christians throughout the world who go hungry every day. But note that this line isn’t talking about the ‘stomach’ and satiation; it is talking about the ‘soul’ and spiritual well being.

vs 9-11 Creates a bigger problem. Maybe David was given an assurance in his heart and mind that his immediate future was going to be success in warring and political events. But, unless we have good evidence that God is saying the same to us, we walk a day at a time without knowing the future beyond that it is in God’s hands! Sadly even these days (and in fact more so than early post Jesus days on earth) many Christians are martyred! As strange as it seems to the world they can die with ‘their souls satisfied as with fat and rich food‘. For God is with them!

Prayer: Help me to be a student of Your word and not merely a superficial ‘glancer’ at it.

  1. Thank you Barry for your comments on this passage which are so true. The question is, “Do we as Christians in these days, hunger and thirst for righteousness, and for God?” This Psalm gives us much food for thought. I noticed that the last word of the Scripture passage was an error. “sto” I believe should have been “stopped.” God bless you.

    1. Marion I have corrected the missed letters. which should help if anyone opens it in the future. As far as your comment goes I guess it is important for us to hunger and thirst – for others we can only encourage them.
