2 Samuel 22:1-7….A long song of David.

1 And David spoke to the LORD the words of this song on the day when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. 2 He said, The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
3 my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation,
my stronghold and my refuge, my savior; you save me from violence.
4 I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies.
5 “For the waves of death encompassed me, the torrents of destruction assailed me;
6 the cords of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me.
7 “In my distress I called upon the LORD; to my God I called.
From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry came to his ears.

Comment: The first verse of the chapter gives us a hint as to when this song was written. It says ‘when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul.‘ It reads like a short autobiography written in poetry. Mass production of books wasn’t available then – they kept excellent records but they all had to be hand written by ‘scribes’. You didn’t need thousands of copies only relatively few and speakers or singers could criss-cross the county publicly sharing the message. At the beginning David fires off a barrage of words expressing who God is to him – ‘The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my savior; you save me from violence. A lot of these words are related to his being a warrior. Few of us would use ‘rock’ as a description of God but I suspect many of us would use ‘foundation’; I wonder ‘what does the “horn of my salvation” mean?’ Possibly it was the rallying cry of a group of soldiers arriving to deliver him (David) when he was caught in a fierce battle. God coming into a situation in our lives makes a huge difference. Did he use ‘saviour’ in a battle or in an eternal sense?

Prayer: Help me to list off what You really mean to me, and be thankful.

  1. Thank you Barry for your comments on this passage. I checked in my NIV Study Bible and found that Psalm 18 matches up with the words of this song in 2 Sam.22. So that was an interesting discovery. It is a familiar Psalm and the words show David’s gratitude to God for keeping him safe. God bless you.
