2 Samuel 22:8-20….As you read what do you hear?

“Then the earth reeled and rocked;
the foundations of the heavens trembled
and quaked, because he was angry.
9 Smoke went up from his nostrils,
and devouring fire from his mouth;
glowing coals flamed forth from him.
10 He bowed the heavens and came down;
thick darkness was under his feet.
11 He rode on a cherub and flew;
he was seen on the wings of the wind.
12 He made darkness around him his canopy,
thick clouds, a gathering of water.
13 Out of the brightness before him
coals of fire flamed forth.
14 The LORD thundered from heaven,
and the Most High uttered his voice.
15 And he sent out arrows and scattered them;
lightning, and routed them.
16 Then the channels of the sea were seen;
the foundations of the world were laid bare,
at the rebuke of the LORD,
at the blast of the breath of his nostrils.
17 “He sent from on high, he took me;
he drew me out of many waters.
18 He rescued me from my strong enemy,
from those who hated me,
for they were too mighty for me.
19 They confronted me in the day of my calamity,
but the LORD was my support.
20 He brought me out into a broad place;
he rescued me, because he delighted in me.

Comment: Some people, when listening to music, can pick up if one note is out of tune! With poetry I struggle a bit to even see the main things to which the poet is seeking to draw attention. But as I read this I hear a volcanic explosion associated with a thunder and lighting storm all under the Hand of God. I am not sure what the ‘channels of the sea’ are. Does it mean the cycle of water from the sea to make rain was fully opened and there was a period of floods? Certainly I hear that David was desperate and God saved him! He was truly thankful. Send me a comment if you have a ‘hearing’ as you read it, which is worth sharing, please!

Prayer: Although I’m not always conscious of it, thank you that You keep me as the ‘apple of Your eye’.

  1. Thank you Barry for your comments on this passage. I tend to agree with the picture you described, of a volcanic eruption. I wondered if there was also an earthquake with it, and a tsunami with the uncontrolled waters of the sea rising and falling. It was certainly some type of huge natural disaster which God either brought down Himself, or allowed to take place. God bless you.

  2. Thank you. I think God didn’t mean us to know every detail but wanted us to wonder in amazement at His power. I trust that you are as well as you can be – God bless.
