All the toil of man is for his mouth, yet his appetite is not satisfied. For what advantage has the wise man over the fool? And what does the poor man have who knows how to conduct himself before the living? Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the appetite: this also is vanity and a striving after wind.
Whatever has come to be has already been named, and it is known what man is, and that he is not able to dispute with one stronger than he. The more words, the more vanity, and what is the advantage to man? For who knows what is good for man while he lives the few days of his vain life, which he passes like a shadow? For who can tell man what will be after him under the sun?
Comment: The only subject which I ever failed at school was grade 11 English! I hated English because I played sport and spoke ‘Strine. I would have hated to have been asked to rewrite the above to give it meaning as I saw it! Very cheeky of me to think that I can add to Solomon’s wisdom but frankly the above leaves me a bit confused. So here I go!
Having a full belly and nothing more isn’t truly satisfying. If a full belly is satisfying enough what advantage is there in being wise and knowing how to act discreetly? Do you have to be rich to get anywhere? Thinking that having wide and tasty gourmet meals is better than seeing things clearly is no better than passing wind! People have tried in the past all the available alternatives known to mankind. Talking much seems to be of little use. Life passes so quickly and who can judge which way is best? But the fundamentally important issue is knowing what is going to happen after you die, as most certainly you will. Does anyone know how to answer that?
Prayer: Help me, asking you for wisdom, to wrestle with Your Word until it makes Your meaning plain to me. Amen.
Thank you Barry for your comments on this passage. The answer I would give to your question is “Jesus”. He is the answer to every question. As the old song says, “Jesus is the Answer for the world today; above Him there’s no other, Jesus is the Way.” God bless you.
