They set their mouths against the heavens, and their tongue struts through the earth.
Therefore his people turn back to them, and find no fault in them.
And they say, “How can God know? Is there knowledge in the Most High?”
Behold, these are the wicked; always at ease, they increase in riches.
All in vain have I kept my heart clean and washed my hands in innocence.
For all the day long I have been stricken and rebuked every morning.
If I had said, “I will speak thus,” I would have betrayed the generation of your children.
But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task,
until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end. Truly you set them in slippery places; you make them fall to ruin.
Comment: From yesterday’s start to this psalm you will remember that Asaph is possibly leading the worshipping people and so far had acknowledged the greatness of God and is in a period of confession. Particularly he is confessing jealousy of the wicked who seem to do very well and God isn’t judging them.
The ‘his people’ underlined above are presumably the cronies of the wicked being talked about whom God seems to be ignoring. The people of God, jealous of the success of the wicked, are questioning if they have made the right choice – evil seems to pay off whereas they are finding it tough!
But clear thinking helps! Betrayal of God is foolishness of the highest order! And God does see! Their ‘slippery past’ may come prior to death – but if not God is the great Arbitrator of Justice!!
Prayer: Help me to remember that this is Your world and that You are in charge.
This passage has helped me in the past when I have wondered why evil seems to win.
