Psalms 74: 12-19….Asaph continues….

12 Yet God my King is from of old,
working salvation in the midst of the earth.
13 You divided the sea by your might;
you broke the heads of the sea monsters on the waters.
14 You crushed the heads of Leviathan;
you gave him as food for the creatures of the wilderness.
15 You split open springs and brooks;
you dried up ever-flowing streams.
16 Yours is the day, yours also the night;
you have established the heavenly lights and the sun.
17 You have fixed all the boundaries of the earth;
you have made summer and winter.
18 Remember this, O LORD, how the enemy scoffs,
and a foolish people reviles your name.
19 Do not deliver the soul of your dove to the wild beasts;
do not forget the life of your poor forever.

Summary: Asaph pleads with God on a very personal term. “My God’ he says! But then he goes on to list the great works of God in making the nation of Israel into what it was. He highlights the trip from Egypt by God splitting the red sea; then he lists much of the miraculous leading of the released enslaved people through the harshness of their days in the wilderness from Sinai to the Jordan. And what is even greater you are the ruler of day and night! You fix the seasons and have sorted the earth into ‘boundaries’! The wild beasts, our attacking enemies, are treating us (Your dove) as food to be devoured. Urgently we need Your help! There is urgency in Asaph’s cry to his God!

Prayer: Stir me, and Your people, from apathy and lethargy as I/we consider the state of our families, our churches, our nations, O Lord, I pray!

  1. I remember a story from one of my fathers sermons about this. It was about a train smash in England and one of the survivors standing on the side looking was the King’s surgeon. Somebody asked why he wasn’t doing anything to help and he said, “I haven’t got my instruments with me.” God needs His instruments.
