Exodus 5: 19-23….God, are You sure that You’re doing this right?

The foremen of the people of Israel saw that they were in trouble when they said, “You shall by no means reduce your number of bricks, your daily task each day.” They met Moses and Aaron, who were waiting for them, as they came out from Pharaoh; and they said to them, “The LORD look on you and judge, because you have made us stink in the sight of Pharaoh and his servants, and have put a sword in their hand to kill us.”
Then Moses turned to the LORD and said, “O Lord, why have you done evil to this people? Why did you ever send me? For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has done evil to this people, and you have not delivered your people at all.”

Comment: To have help taken away, whilst already having an unreasonable work load was surely a good recipe for despair. Then as the elders left Pharaoh’s office without any encouragement they tripped over the two brothers, Moses and Aaron! Moses and Aaron were accused of making the Hebrews a revolting stench in Pharaoh’s nose and having brought them to where it would be easy for the Egyptians to lay a sword across their necks. They were angry and didn’t hold back against the brothers. Moses turned to God with a similar attitude but he did the wise thing in coming to God and being honest!

Prayer: Help me to trust You enough to come humbly to You with my problems and questions.

  1. Thank you Barry for your comments on this passage. As I read and reflect on this story, I stop and try and put myself in the place of Moses and Aaron and the Israelites, as well as the Egyptians. We read this story often, and know it well, and know the end and what God was doing. But the people who were going through this difficult time didn’t have the luxury of knowing from one day to the next just what would happen, even though God had given Moses a good outline of His plan. God bless you.
