A worthless person, a wicked man, goes about with crooked speech, winks with his eyes, signals with his feet, points with his finger, with perverted heart devises evil,
continually sowing discord; therefore calamity will come upon him suddenly; in a moment he will be broken beyond healing.
There are six things that the LORD hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.
Comment: Mankind’s side: consists of 1. crooked, deceitful, lying, perverting speech 2. winking presumably seductively or invitingly, very possibly with sexual implications. 3. ‘What exactly does ‘signals with his feet‘ mean. In some countries you point with your chin to indicate what you want. Does this mean that he is easily moved in what he says or thinks? Does it mean let’s get going in this evil way? Think about it! 4. But it all begins with a heart, having neglected the call to wisdom and right instruction his ‘perverted heart devises evil, continually sowing discord‘. This doesn’t bode well!
God’s side: lists seven things which run around man’s means of expression and all of which can do the wrong thing. 1. Eyes – haughtiness 2. tongue – lying 3. hands – trauma and murder 4. heart – conceives all the evil 5. feet – making speed to the evil plans 6. & 7. Character traits – being prepared to hide the truth and secondly purposefully and falsely dividing brotherly relationships. Remember that in many languages the word ‘brother’ extends far beyond genetics!
