A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. – Soft here means considered and gentle, not meaningless and weak!
The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouths of fools pour out folly. – What can I say! So true!
The eyes of the LORD are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good. – This is sometimes a terrifying thought but at other times very comforting! My feeling about God knowing everything will depend upon, and should govern, my behaviour!
A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit. – In your/my speech are we builder-upperers or destroyers?
A fool despises his father’s instruction, but whoever heeds reproof is prudent. – I guess in some ways it depends on the father. My father used to say, ‘Do as I say, not as I do.’ Many fathers give good advice, Father God always!
In the house of the righteous there is much treasure, but trouble befalls the income of the wicked. – Even if there may not be much money, there is much true ‘treasure’ for the righteous. trouble ultimately comes to the wicked!
The lips of the wise spread knowledge; not so the hearts of fools. – From wise people’s mouth knowledge spews out, but even if it comes from their hearts fools utter rubbish!
The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD, but the prayer of the upright is acceptable to him. – A sacrifice needs to be a true expression of the heart of the one who is offering it! David says in Ps 51, ‘The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God you will not despise. ‘The way of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD, but he loves him who pursues righteousness. – God’s whole character cannot be summed up in a single word! He is ‘Love’ but His character ‘coat’ is of many colours! You need many words to encompass His character!
There is severe discipline for him who forsakes the way; whoever hates reproof will die. – Don’t be simplistic and stupid in dealing with God!
Sheol and Abaddon lie open before the LORD; how much more the hearts of the children of man! – God’s eyes can see into the deepest hell. Looking through our thoughts, hidden motives, deception is easy for Him. Beware, if we think that we can fool Him.!
Prayer: As I say so often, Lord, please help me to learn from Your Word!
