Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise. – If only many would learn this earlier. When I was director of surgery in a 600 bed hospital we had to close down one of our two orthopaedic wards when an beer carrying strike went on for several months. Admissions were reduced in other wards as well. Sadly when the strike ended we had to run full services again!
The terror of a king is like the growling of a lion; whoever provokes him to anger forfeits his life. – this king sounds more like a despot than a just king! But it reminds me of many of the laws of modern time which harm people of good intention! For example being arrested for praying quietly in public!
It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife, but every fool will be quarreling.
The sluggard does not plow in the autumn; he will seek at harvest and have nothing. – the sluggard gets what he deserves but his stupidity is often shared with his family!
The purpose in a man’s heart is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out. – Rubbish often floats to the top and we need to prayerfully dig deeper to get the real prizes in life. Digging into God’s Word helps!
Many a man proclaims his own steadfast love, but a faithful man who can find? – Steadfast love is God’s type of love – not erotic or superficially emotional but constant and durable. A person with love like that is well worth befriending!
The righteous who walks in his integrity— blessed are his children after him! – walk in integrity for your own, your partners and your kids sake!!!
A king who sits on the throne of judgment winnows all evil with his eyes. – But sometimes winnows the evil to his own benefit!
Who can say, “I have made my heart pure; I am clean from my sin”? – What can make me clean again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus!
Unequal weights and unequal measures are both alike an abomination to the LORD. – True and to all those who are taken in by this corruption. Ultimately it stands against those who practice such things! In these days scams are very similar!
Prayer: Please don’t let me think that these are proverbs only for my neighbour!
