That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons. And the whole city was gathered together at the door. And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.
And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed. And Simon and those who were with him searched for him, and they found him and said to him, “Everyone is looking for you.” And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.” And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons. And a leper came to him, imploring him, and kneeling said to him, “If you will, you can make me clean.” Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.” And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean. And Jesus sternly charged him and sent him away at once, and said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a proof to them.” But he went out and began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter a town, but was out in desolate places, and people were coming to him from every quarter.

Comment: The books of Luke and Acts were written by a medical doctor, Dr Luke. There was no medicare system and, although there is evidence that some did operations eg amputations, drained fluids from the chest, and the Egyptians used to bore holes in the cranium to relieve pressure. I don’t know what their success rate was! For many years effective medicines were limited to salicylic acid (aspirin) and digitalis. So there were many different diseases for which there was little help but the person to bear and endure it! No wonder when Jesus performed a few miraculous healings that he was swamped with requests to act on the sufferers’ behalf! Jesus didn’t heal just one or two but many and He could have kept on running a healing clinic for zoodles of days but He moved on saying “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.” Curing disease is a very significant work but rightly an individual’s personal relationship with God is much more important and urgent! We have many samples in the gospels of what Jesus taught and preached about. It was the ‘gospel’ the ‘good news of what Jesus can, wants to and is able to do – to make people right with God! The one case which is highlighted is the healing of a leper. Although lepers are no more sinners than any of us and their leprosy is not a result of their being sinners, nevertheless, because of the horror of the disease and it causing rejection by the community, leprosy has over the centuries been seen as a good thing to use as a ‘type’ of sin. And Jesus being able to cure the ‘nastiest’ of diseases with all its severed relationships is seen as a good ‘type’ of what He can do for the sinner!
Proverbs 21: 6 It is better to live in a corner of the housetop than in a house shared with a quarrelsome wife.
Prayer: Thank You, Jesus, that You can restore and wait to restore our relationship with the Father.
Very difficult post to understand.
But are saying that are going to live in a corner of the housetop?
