15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
Comment: As you probably know very well, words have different nuances in different contexts! Here we have the word ‘world’ used six times. Here the world does not mean the planet earth, although the planet is included as a secondary meaning in the sixth usage. God made the world and He said that it was good! God says in Romans 1 that all can see Him in His Creation, and are responsible if they fail to see Him there! Here the word ‘world’ is used to mean the attitude of rejection of God’s rule as started by Adam and Eve. It is universal until people repent and accept God’s offer of reconciliation. People can even do their ‘good’ works in rebellion to God; they can take God ordained right things and pervert them. Here healthy and God given appetites under the rebellious present world order are to be avoided. Well not completely avoided but followed as God ordained them to be followed – such things as purpose in life, eating, sexual urges etc. ‘Desires’ is the word used here to mark things outside of God’s ordained plan! The sixth usage of ‘world’ basically means that when Jesus returns the devil will be gone and every thing perfect! But at that time the world be replaced by a new heaven and a new earth also!
18 Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us. But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge. I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth. Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son.
Comment: The mention of ‘the last hour’ is not talking about 60 minutes! It means that Christ has done His Salvation works and we are in the ‘hour’ until Jesus returns to be the Judge and King on site! The centrality of the ‘Father and the Son’ is being denied by some called here ‘antichrists’. So John is pleading for the children of the true faith to not be diverted by lies, falsehoods, heresies, by teachers who have gone away from the true gospel and become anti-Christ! John, metaphorically, underlines and writes in red that there is a huge difference between truth and lies! Between Biblical doctrine and worldly interpretations of how life is to be lived! “This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son.“
Proverbs 19: 9 – A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who breathes out lies will perish.
Prayer: Thank You, Jesus, that You are the Way, the Truth and the Life!
