11 Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand?
Take it from the fold of your garment and destroy them!
12 Yet God my King is from of old,
working salvation in the midst of the earth.
13 You divided the sea by your might;
you broke the heads of the sea monsters on the waters.
14 You crushed the heads of Leviathan;
you gave him as food for the creatures of the wilderness.
15 You split open springs and brooks;
you dried up ever-flowing streams.
16 Yours is the day, yours also the night;
you have established the heavenly lights and the sun.
17 You have fixed all the boundaries of the earth;
you have made summer and winter.
18 Remember this, O LORD, how the enemy scoffs,
and a foolish people reviles your name.
Comment: v11 was the concluding portion from yesterday. The psalmist’s strong plea was for God to take decisive action on Israel’s behalf. In vvs 12-15 the Psalmist with language that was clear to the people of the Psalmist’s day but which we have to do some research to understand. You can look up ‘leviathan’ in your concordance or on Wikipedia for more information but as I understand it – in the Book of Job a leviathan is a sea animal, maybe their word for a type of whale or shark, I don’t know. But it must have been a nasty animal for it is used to describe evil. Satan? Yes but it has many heads as evil has many forms and the Devil has demons to do his will! God’s support of Israel against its many enemies as it travelled from Egypt to Canaan is dealt with in the sentence ‘You crushed the heads of Leviathan;
you gave him as food for the creatures of the wilderness.‘ vvs 16&17 The psalmist reminds God great He is, as the Creator. He looks to the great Power of God, and in v 18. He points out to God that ranting idiots are daring to mock Him!
Proverbs 3: 33-34 – The LORD’S curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the dwelling of the righteous. Toward the scorners he is scornful, but to the humble he gives favor.
Prayer: The world mocks and martyrs your people, O Lord. Help us to remain true to You, so that opposition is not because we are bad, but because we are right!
