Psalm 104: 1-4….You must be careful, and you’ll still make mistakes!

Information: This is my seventh day in Psalms. I usually rotate weekly between three Bible books. Psalm 104 has 35 verses and therefore I am going to divert – today I’m using these few verses (I’ll be back within 15 days) to consider how important it is to think through what words are meant to mean by the writer. Often we do this subconsciously but if we don’t get it right we can often be up the creek, the wrong creek!

Spoken by the author to himself.
Bless the LORD, O my soul!
Spoken by the author to God.
O LORD my God, you are very great!
You are clothed with splendor and majesty,
covering yourself with light as with a garment,
stretching out the heavens like a tent.

Spoken by the author about God.
He lays the beams of his chambers on the waters;
he makes the clouds his chariot;
he rides on the wings of the wind;
he makes his messengers winds,
his ministers a flaming fire.

Comment: I find that for me it is always helpful to try and deduce who is the author and to whom it is addressed. This Psalm doesn’t tell us at the beginning who the author is. We cannot assume that this one, 104, was from the pen of David.
Recently we have considered what blessing means when we ‘bless God’. It has to do with attitude and obedience!
The phrase ‘covering yourself with light‘ is possibly understood in two ways. When Jesus said ‘I am the Light of the world’, what did He mean? Did He mean that He had made the sun and the stars – that He is the Creator? He was not a ‘lighthouse’, He was a man, although a God-Man, in fact the Creator in TRUE FACTUAL FACT! Was that what He was referring to? I think that Jesus was using the word ‘light’ to mean ‘the basic answer to understanding what life is about’ – or something like that! Which of the two do you think the author of Psalm 104 was meaning in this Psalm? Or did he mean both? I think that he meant the Creator as aspect of light because he has an ‘s’ on heaven! The writer is worshipping, acknowledging God as the Creator. The ‘s’ makes a difference as there is only one eternal heaven, that is the place which God as the Supreme Almighty I AM inhabits and who fills every nook!
The portion written to us, the readers, reminds us that every crack of thunder, change in cloud cover, drop of rain, windy storm should remind us of our Creator, the all powerful God!

Isaiah 45: 11a&12 – Thus says the LORD,…
“I made the earth and created man on it; it was my hands that stretched out the heavens, and I commanded all their host.”

Prayer: I bless You as both my Creator and Saviour, Triune God. I thank You for my reconciliation as Your son. Thanks.
