Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.
Comment: The ‘therefore’ after a statement of who Jesus is, and where He stands in the view of God, in chapter one, is a word of expectation. Maybe particularly referring to the phrase ‘After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,’ a warning is offered. The author claims evidence for the reality of the person of Jesus as to what is claimed in chapter one is evidenced by –
- The words recorded above in ch 1 by God’s quoted prophecies. (In addition in the gospels God is claimed to have spoken audibly to verify the Person of Jesus.)
- Signs, wonders, miracles as recorded in the gospels and the book of Acts
- Spiritual Gifts distributed as the Spirit of God willed.
- The author claims that these things are verified by persons who have seen and heard them. No doubt he means people who have lived alongside and listened to Jesus, as well as seeing the above events.
These are not every day occurrences. We are trained to be skeptical of all that can’t be scientifically tested. But these things are beyond science and we are better to look into history and the writings of the times. The church blossomed in early days and has in many, many ways changed the world, by believing the above.
Prayer: Help me to be honest to the truths in Your word, God if this is ‘True Truth’.
