About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.
Comment: Four points are made emphatically in this short passage.
- The people to whom the author is writing are ‘dull of hearing’. This makes his job of explaining these spiritual truths very difficult.
- By now they should be able to teach these truths but his readers had grown slack on the job of understanding.
- Milk is good in its place but solid food is necessary for full development – both in the physical and spiritual realms.
- Discerning good and evil (truth and error) needs constant practice.
Prayer: Help me to strive and wrestle and persevere in my understanding and belief in Your Word, O God.
Thank you Barry for your comments. My Prayer is “Help me, Lord, not to become ‘dull of hearing’.” God bless you.
