Psalm 9: 1-10….A series of couplets.

I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart;
I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.
I will be glad and exult in you;
I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.
This psalm is written as many of the psalms are with a thought repeated before moving on to the next stage of thought and prayer. So above we have David’s intent to give himself totally to the praise of the Most High.
When my enemies turn back,
they stumble and perish before your presence.
For you have maintained my just cause;
you have sat on the throne, giving righteous judgment.
An affirmation that God should be praised because David’s enemies have fallen and failed because of the Just God acting.
You have rebuked the nations; you have made the wicked perish;
you have blotted out their name forever and ever.
The enemy came to an end in everlasting ruins;
their cities you rooted out;
the very memory of them has perished.
God is praised because He has dealt successfully with the evil nations who stood in God’s way for the settling in of His chosen people in their land.
But the LORD sits enthroned forever;
he has established his throne for justice,
and he judges the world with righteousness;
he judges the peoples with uprightness.
God’s enduring qualities of justice, righteousness and upright judgements are praised. In the short term it doesn’t always seem as if this true but in the long run it most certainly is!

The LORD is a stronghold for the oppressed,
a stronghold in times of trouble.
And those who know your name put their trust in you,
for you, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you.
God’s heart for the oppressed and the troubled is underlined by praising the certainty that God will not forsake those who trust Him.

Prayer: Open my eyes to see that history is really Your story, and learn to praise You.

  1. Thank you Barry for your comments on this passage. The Lord reigns, He is the Sovereign One. We can trust Him when everything else fails. There are times when it is not easy to thank and praise the Lord, but we need to keep our eyes fixed on Him. He is our one and only Hope. God bless you.
