Psalm 8 1-9….Look all around you!

O LORD, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
Out of the mouth of babies and infants,
you have established strength because of your foes,
to still the enemy and the avenger.
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him?
Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings
and crowned him with glory and honour.
You have given him dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under his feet,
all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field,
the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
O LORD, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the

Comment: My wife often says to me that listening to something said and reading something written is very different. You can’t hear the emphasises, the highlighting putting into speaking when you read the same words. Hopefully the punctuation helps to get the writer’s meaning across. The fifth and sixth lines of this psalm highlights the skeptic who denies God His glory, due to him from His creation of everything, as we glance into the skies. And David says even the smallest toddler when he/she looks up is lost in wonder at what they see. ‘Twinkle, twinkle little star’ penned years ago shouts this out.

Compared to that majestic creation what is a man’s life worth? Well the heavenly beings are of a higher order, but David says, that God has put honour and responsibility into the hands of mankind by giving us a whole world to enjoy and care for.

Prayer: Yes, God, You deserve a lot of praise!

  1. Thank you Barry for your comments on this Psalm. When compared to the moon and the stars, what is man? We are so small and insignificant, we live for a few short years, and then we are gone. And yet, God has created us, along with the animals, the birds, the fish and all of God’s creation. He knows us by name, and He counts the hairs on our head, He sent His Son to die for us, and to rise from the dead, and He offers us salvation through His Son. How Majestic is Your Name O Lord! God bless you,
