Mark 9: 1-8…. A clearer picture.

And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power.”
And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.” And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only.

Comment: This is very thought provoking. Was the kingdom already there because Jesus, God’s appointed King, was there already? Is the power of that statement in the phrase ‘with power’? Does Jesus mean real power will come to His earthly Kingdom with the finished work of the Cross/Resurrection experience, which they were all about to experience and had just been talking about? Does it refer to the three who ascended the mount and saw and heard God’s powerful display. Jesus appeared glorious before them and the two long dead men (dead at any rate to life on the earth) were presented? They were great men of the past representing the Law and Prophets. I suspect that even if God’s voice had been recorded there would be people today saying that it was faked. Peter, James and John didn’t doubt Who spoke!

Prayer: Let my understanding of You, O God, be clear as the Creator, Redeemer, and Final Judge. May I also be very conscious of Your Nearness and Love!

  1. Thank you Barry for your comments on this passage. This is a very significant event with Jesus being transfigured, and Moses and Elijah being present and God’s voice confirming His Son Jesus, and to listen to Him. Peter, James and John were very fortunate to be selected by Jesus to see this amazing event. They obviously told Matthew, Mark and Luke about it as it is also recorded in those Gospels. Peter does mention it in one of his epistles. This confirms to me that Jesus is who He claimed to be, and gives me assurance of my faith and trust in Him. God bless you.
