Now why do you cry aloud?
Is there no king in you?
Has your counsellor perished,
that pain seized you like a woman in labor?
Writhe and groan, O daughter of Zion,
like a woman in labor,
for now you shall go out from the city
and dwell in the open country;
you shall go to Babylon.
There you shall be rescued;
there the LORD will redeem you
from the hand of your enemies.
Now many nations
are assembled against you,
saying, “Let her be defiled,
and let our eyes gaze upon Zion.”
Comment: If you remember yesterday’s passage it was all about what God has planned for the future. It ended up talking about a restored situation and kingship for the daughter of Jerusalem. Today the passage starts off with what sounds like a taunt! Where is this king of yours? And it goes on to remind them of the initial message of Judgement. We see listed…..
- Writhing and groaning like a woman in labour (before modern pain management).
- City life destroyed and back to very basic countryside dwelling – you may remember Jerusalem was described as a heap of stones in a ploughed paddock.
- Captivity to Babylon, but with a caveat of promised future redemption.
- Now the surrounding nations, like a pack of hyenas (my thought), awaiting her death to collect the pickings!
Comment: Help me to learn the lesson well that You do not tolerate evil, Lord God.
Thank you Barry for your comments on this passage. God does not tolerate evil. That statement is something we humans need to remember, and never forget. God does not tolerate evil. It reminds me of the verse that says, “Be no deceived, God is not mocked. Whatever a man sows, that will he reap.” Gal.6:7. God bless you.
