With what shall I come before the LORD,
and bow myself before God on high?
Shall I come before him with burnt offerings,
with calves a year old?
Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams,
with ten thousands of rivers of oil?
Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression,
the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?” Comment: It seems as if the people, sticken by guilt to the depths of their beings, cry out ‘what then can we do to please God’. But their misunderstanding and sadly sinful practices cause them to exaggerate the things God requires and even leads them to consider infanticide worship as they see practiced in the surrounding regions, I picture Micah tearing out his hair as he reminds them…
He has told you, O man, what is good;
and what does the LORD require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God?
The voice of the LORD cries to the city—
and it is sound wisdom to fear your name: Comment: God had chosen them as His people. So in a beautiful summary of the law they are reminded to listen to the calling voice of God ‘to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God. What a challenge that is to you and me!
Prayer: Help me to practice what You make so clear to me, O God.
Thank you Barry for your comments on this passage. We humans try to justify what we have done, even when we know that we have not done what God wants. We need to come back to the basics of God’s Word and see what we really need to be doing. It is not something hard to do, showing justice and kindness, and doing God’s Will. God bless you.
