This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, that you should remember the predictions of the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Saviour through your apostles, knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires. They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.”
Comment: When we were looking at the second book of the apostle Peter to the young church recently there was a lot about heretics and scoffers. Here he deals with a particular point at which the scoffers were attacking the beliefs of the church. Jesus had talked about His return to earth after His Ascension to heaven and His Glorification at the right hand of God the Father. They were using the argument of His not having returned just 30-40 years after Jesus ascended as a reason to doubt His reliability! We’re living two thousand years later! Are there scoffers today? We’ll wait and see what Peter has to say in the rest of this letter. But it is of interest, whilst there is a lot of Biblical scepticism these days, that there is a lot of talk about the world crashing in on itself with climate change etc. As I said, it will be interesting to hear what Peter says!
Prayer: I neither seek to be fooled nor to be led astray. Guide me, O Thou Great Jehovah!
Thank you Barry for your comments on this passage. Scoffers are in our society today, and have always been there. Those who do not believe in God, and who have no intention of doing so. Only the Holy Spirit can change their hearts and minds. We Christians need to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, and hold onto Him. God bless you.
