For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God, and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished. But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.
But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
Comment: The ‘they’ of the first sentence are obviously the scoffers of yesterday. Without going into detail Peter reminds them that God, the Creator made the world a long time ago. Without referring to Noah by name he clearly indicates that God has in the past (by the great flood) destroyed things and knows how to do such things! Without a lot of explanation Peter says that next time round God will solve the problem not with water but with fire. It will be in judgement and destroy the ‘ungodly’.
God’s clock, Peter says, does not necessarily run as those on earth do! Sure judgement is delayed but the delay is not due to God being unable but due to His desire for people to repent! More tomorrow!
Prayer: Help me in this life to see what I need but to remember Your call to ‘walk by faith’! And please open the eyes of understanding of today’s scoffers.
Thank you Barry for your comments on this passage. God is patient, not willing that any should perish. He is giving everyone time to come to Him in repentance and faith. His timing is always “right on time”. God bless you.
