But Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. Now as he went on his way, he approached Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven shone around him. And falling to the ground, he heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” And he said, “Who are you, Lord?” And he said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. But rise and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do.” The men who were traveling with him stood speechless, hearing the voice but seeing no one.
Comment: Saul knew the Old Testament Scriptures well. But his (mis)understanding of their true meaning and purpose was taking him to Damascus to continue his radical and horrific persecution of Jesus’ followers. His entourage is spot-lighted by a light from heaven and a Voice from the heavens challenging Saul as to why he, Saul, was acting like he was. And Jesus speaks telling him to continue on his journey but that he will be given a new set of orders to which he must march! The whole group were a witness to the event even though none saw the speaker. But Jesus proclaimed Himself as the speaker.
Prayer: You don’t often speak like You spoke that day, Lord. But thank You that You do get Your meaning across to us by many ways.
