Do not say, “I will repay evil”; wait for the LORD, and he will deliver you. – In reading proverbs we need to think deeply and honestly. For instance in the first one today, it should not and hopefully does not apply to a judge when a murderer is found guilty by a legal court! He must sentence the person! But it does apply to me when someone treats me nastily. But even then the judge must consider circumstances surrounding the murder and I am not supposed to allow myself to be a doormat for everyone to endlessly walk over me!
Unequal weights are an abomination to the LORD, and false scales are not good. – I think that this is absolutely true, not just a principle!
A man’s steps are from the LORD; how then can man understand his way? –Does this refer to the number of steps before God calls an end to our earthly life? Or does it refer to something else?
It is a snare to say rashly, “It is holy,” and to reflect only after making vows. – Don’t make promises to God which you don’t intend to keep!
A wise king winnows the wicked and drives the wheel over them. – We must hope and pray for wise kings and governments!
The spirit of man is the lamp of the LORD, searching all his innermost parts. – This cannot be considered fully in a moment. I urge you to take time to think deeply about this. Some starting points for thought – ‘God breathed into Adam the breath of life’; ‘conscience’ needs considering; Is the lamp of God the Spirit of God who indwells believers?; these are a starting point.
Steadfast love and faithfulness preserve the king, and by steadfast love his throne is upheld. – This is true in the sense that God’s faithfulness and love is steadfast towards all mankind, kings included, but our being steadfast as well makes a huge difference!
The glory of young men is their strength, but the splendor of old men is their gray hair. – Strength needs to be both of muscle and character; old age needs to include wisdom and not just the colour of the hair!
Blows that wound cleanse away evil; strokes make clean the innermost parts. – Wise discipline and even punishment can be curative! Appropriate dicipline (even smacking) of children is not domestic violence!
Prayer: Please help me to be a steadfast loving, faithful and wise person, God.
