Introduction: Cuckoos don’t build nests because they are obligate brood parasites. Instead of raising their own young, they trick other bird species into incubating and feeding their chicks. Some people when they read Psalms like Ps 92 assume that they can become obligate parasites on God so that they will be carried through life as if riding on a magic carpet! That is not the purpose of this Psalm! It should be read in the context of eternity, and all of God’s revelation! Sometimes and marvellously life is a bit like walking on water, other times it is like fighting being drowned in stormy seas! Sometimes God allowed David to overthrow Goliath, other times God expected David to hide in caves from Saul!
To understand the last verse of this Psalm is essential. It must be understood in the reality of Eternity, when caught in the light of life’s ups and downs! – ‘When he calls to me, I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will rescue him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him
and show him my salvation.’
9 Because you have made the LORD your dwelling place—
the Most High, who is my refuge—
10 no evil shall be allowed to befall you,
no plague come near your tent. – Don’t forget Job!
11 For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways.
12 On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and the adder;
the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot.
14 “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him;
I will protect him, because he knows my name. – when you think of Job remember that there are 42 chapters to the book! I am sure that at the end Job would have said ‘Amen’ when he finished reading Psalm 92!
15 When he calls to me, I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will rescue him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him – with eternal life!
and show him my salvation.”
1 Peter 2: 20-21 – For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.
Prayer: Thank You that You walk with us through all the vicissitudes of life, and that if we are in Jesus we are safe for all Eternity.
