Proverbs 1: 28-33

My son, if you receive my words
and treasure up my commandments with you,
making your ear attentive to wisdom
and inclining your heart to understanding;
yes, if you call out for insight
and raise your voice for understanding,
if you seek it like silver
and search for it as for hidden treasures,
then you will understand the fear of the LORD
and find the knowledge of God.

For the LORD gives wisdom;
from his mouth come knowledge and understanding;
he stores up sound wisdom for the upright;
he is a shield to those who walk in integrity,
guarding the paths of justice
and watching over the way of his saints.

The last passage was about Wisdom calling. This is about the other side of the coin – the necessity for us to seek wisdom! Again Solomon piles concept upon concept to encourage us to ‘mean business’ in our dealings with God.
Receive my words
Treasure my commandments
Attentive ears
Inclining your heart
Being vocal – raise your voice
Searching as for treasure!

If you search you will learn to fear God and get knowledge (on which to base wisdom).
I guess we need to think about the word ‘fear’. It is not as if God is out to terrorise us but He is One whom we should approach with awe.

The second portion in the above quote, whilst reminding us about our responsibility of integrity, underlines the results of our searching – wisdom, knowledge, understanding, protection! God is waiting to give generously if we seek.

Prayer: Help me in a search for character wealth, rather than mere things, please.
