Proverbs 2 16-22 ESV
So you will be delivered from the forbidden woman,
from the adulteress with her smooth words,
who forsakes the companion of her youth
and forgets the covenant of her God;
for her house sinks down to death,
and her paths to the departed;
none who go to her come back,
nor do they regain the paths of life.
So you will walk in the way of the good
and keep to the paths of the righteous.
For the upright will inhabit the land,
and those with integrity will remain in it,
but the wicked will be cut off from the land,
and the treacherous will be rooted out of it.
Unlike our modern society proverbs and the whole Bible is strong on marriage and faithfulness. One man, one woman and no dilly-dallying around. Of course there are many Bible records where this principle is broken but the emphasis doesn’t change. Our laws may change and seem to make acceptable what God has condemned. But God’s standards are not changed by the arguments of law makers, psychologists, or anyone else. The family unit is a basic unit in God’s design. This passage seems to put a lot blame on the female side and certainly women can seek attention in this way, but Solomon by emphasising this aspect of life, and challenging the male is acknowledging the weakness of men as well. Hence he gives such strong advice to men to take care! It takes two to tango!
Solomon argues that a good and righteous community is much to be desired and hints that (ultimately) there will be a rooting out of evil ways. It certainly hasn’t happened yet in the large scale but how blessed is the family/community which takes it seriously. Each one who chooses the right path adds to the strength and well-being of their society.
Prayer: Help me to refuse the calls to walk a wrong path no matter how they come.
