Micah 3: 5-8…..Leaders yesterday, advisers today!

Thus says the LORD concerning the prophets
who lead my people astray,
who cry “Peace”
when they have something to eat,
but declare war against him
who puts nothing into their mouths.
Therefore it shall be night to you, without vision,
and darkness to you, without divination.
The sun shall go down on the prophets,
and the day shall be black over them;
the seers shall be disgraced,
and the diviners put to shame;
they shall all cover their lips,
for there is no answer from God.
But as for me, I am filled with power,
with the Spirit of the LORD,
and with justice and might,
to declare to Jacob his transgression
and to Israel his sin

Comment: We have 3 sections in this short passage.

  • Prophets (preachers) are accused of giving messages according to how they were fed or paid. Good food – peace was preached; if nothing of great value was offered then war, which possibly is better understood as distress, was proclaimed. The future is going to be a black day for them without God-given insight.
  • Seers and diviners, the exact job of whom is not clear, were supposed to see into the future and in some cases were said to talk with the dead. They are promised disgrace and nothing worthwhile to say.
  • Micah, however, is filled with the Spirit and the power of God to mightily enumerate the sins of the people and proclaim the just judgement of God.

Prayer: Deliver us, we pray, from evil leaders and lying advisers, O Lord.

  1. Thank you Barry for your comments on this passage. In this day and age, we definitely need deliverance from evil leaders and lying advisers. Unfortunately nothing has changed since this was being done even in Micah’s time. God bless you.
